through the process of building a literal coffee table book of coffee tables i will be able to explore an interest in books compiled of photographs, self-reference and sculpture. my image series will be composed of photographs of multiple types of coffee tables in various states of use. i will then attach the images to the top of a coffee table, making a coffee table coffee table book in an attempt to recreate, or simulate the experience of looking at different coffee tables.

my book will be approximately 20inches by 30 inches. if it is possible i would like to try to make it around 24inches by 48inches. there will be no back cover, because it will be attached to a coffee table, so i guess the table would be the back cover. the artist statement, or any text will not appear in the book.
i am considering using the blank table and only pictures of that table as it progresses then attach the image to the table that the pictures are of.

  1. Hi Alex!
I like the addition of the image of the empty coffee table.I am into the marks, though the lighting is a little strong in one area.

I vote that you use that table throughout, since you seem to have more picks of it, that would mean that the cover will need to have the letters on that table too. Fun!

  3. I agree. I really like this image and I think if you decided to just use the pictures of this table throughout the book it'd be nice to see the blocks of letters on them (if it's just to compare it with the other cover images).

  4. I like this image of the coffee table and I think it will definitely work to use this table throughout the book. Also the new pictures look great!

  5. I'd like to see you just do images of the one coffee table. It's neat to see how it evolves and it makes the viewer think about the owner and what they do each day (since the objects on the table change and move).

  7. I reaaly like your original cover, with that said I wish you wouldnt focus on one table. Although if hyou do focus on one table I agree you would have to re shoot the cover. Either way this is a great idea.

  8. I like the cover with the smaller letters. The title is there but not overpowering the table. I think this is great!

  9. I thought the first cover was pretty good. If you focus on the one table, it'll be interesting too.
Would you consider mounting the book on that table you've photo'd?

  10. i think u should use letters on the cover just b/c most of ur other pics have items on the table. the one with the bigger letters seems to work well since the image itself is really large.the smaller blocks are a little to small. love the composition and placement of blocks!

  12. I like the blank coffee table for your cover. I think that would be the best choice. I also think you should go ahead with your idea of taking pictures of the same coffee table, it would give the book an intimate feel with the viewer because they would be engaging and relating with the everyday objects placed on the table. Looks like you are all set to go! Can't wait to see the finished book!

  13. I like your coffee table book cover with the letters that are larger; it makes it easier to read the word. It is also well shot. Overall I think that you should include all the photos in the book. Keep one as the front cover and possibly put the rest in the book.

  14. I really connect with the third photo. The lighting and letters invite me inside. Although I like rustic furniture, I feel the formal table with the clutter is more interesting. But, I also don't know what type of table you will mount the book on, so I would take that into consideration as well.

  16. I agree with melissa, I really like the coffee table with the letters on them. I feel the other one is too plain, but that's just my opinion. Love the new photos!
